DUSTON'S TREE OF HOPE BRINGS THE COMMUNITY TOGETHER

28th December 2020

Last Summer, Duston Parish council kept the community connected during their ‘reduced’ Duston in Bloom 2020 programme.

During the lockdown Duston Parish council asked its residents to create a ‘fantastically colourful Tree of Hope’.

The idea of the tree was to help celebrate the wonderful community spirit in our village during the first Coronavirus outbreak.

In the future they hope to create more events that bring the community together. The flowers for the tree have been made by people from Brownies and Guide units along with people from the local care homes.

The Tree will remain as a permanent symbol of the community and how they stuck together.

Sarah Percival, the Community Events Officer for Duston Parish Council, says: “It was one of the things that we came up with to try and engage the community, to give them something to do is give them a little bit of hope.”

“To keep them occupied and to give people something to go and look at on their daily walks you know that sort of thing.”

“We just felt that it was just really important to do something you know and think outside the box, do something that somebody has never done before.

Sarah carries on by saying that: “A lot of research went into it, there was an old tree that we thought actually looked a little bit sad, we could probably cheer you up with something and that's why it went from there really.”

A sign posted by the tree reads: “The Tree of Hope signifies strength and renewed hope for the future. Made up of individual components, lovingly crafted by many local residents, it also celebrates the spirit of our wonderful community who pulled together and remained strong during challenging times.”

You are able to visit the Tree of hope at the junction of Sandy Lane and Berrywood Road in Duston, Northampton.
